Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear and again when you log in. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Isolating an issue by using another user account The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. Has any other member experienced similar problems or are mine unique?ĭo a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. I have effectively skipped over several intermediate operating systems (Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks) to get to this current state. I am wondering if settings leftover from SL or M maybe the cause of these problems. But first I must get access to Y's Mail Preferences. These are the only 3 issues I've encountered so far with Y Mail but there maybe other issues waiting to be discovered. I have removed SpamSieve to see if that would improve matters. I am using a Y-compatible version of SpamSieve. I use SpamSieve with Y Mail which I have also used successfully with SL Mail for many years. Because I cannot access Y Mail Preferences I cannot check or change these filters. I have almost 600 of these offline mailboxes. These filters recognise the sender and moves the email to a corresponding sender-specific offline mailbox. That's a very long time to wait and very annoying.įurthermore, there is evidence that 'some' of the mail filters I previously setup in SL Mail are working in Y Mail.

I am wondering if any settings leftover from SL or M might be interfering with Y or Mail?Īlso, the Y Mail mailbox 'email counters', those small discs with numbers inside, can take up to 20 seconds to update after changes made to the contents of the mailboxes, e.g.

I have performed a Clean Install of Y but the problem persists. When I Force Quit Mail a report is sent to Apple. Very, very occasionally the Mail Preferences pane will appear but there is no way to access it. I have to relaunch Mail if I wish to use it. I have to Force Quit Mail to regain control.

SL Mail and Mavericks Mail worked well and without issues.įollowing the Y upgrade any attempt to access the Mail Preferences results in the 'spinning beachball' and my MBP hangs. I briefly updated to Mavericks (M) but very soon after updated to Y.

I previously found an answer from an Eric Root which seemed to describe this situation but I was unable to reply to his solution to see if he had further ideas.I have installed Yosemite, Y (10.10.2) on my MacBook Pro 6,2 (MBP) which previously ran with Snow Leopard, SL (!0.6.8). Mail is Version 7.3 (1878.6) Spamsieve is Version 2.9.17

I am running Mac OS 10.9.5 on a 27 inch iMac, processor 3.2 GHz Intel Core i3, Memory 8GB 1333 MHz DDR3. I have to select one or several rules in my Inbox and then select the menu item Apply Rules. Is SpamSieve suppressing Rules or is the disappearance of Rules not related? It might be relevant that I recently installed SpamSieve which I used for a long time until I changed from Eudora to Mail. But the rules must be around in some form or they would not work when I Apply Rules to files in my inbox. I have actually had the problem for several months but really did not feel a strong need to edit my Rules until recently so the missing Rules window was not an issue. I cannot locate an older version of ist because I outgrew one backup hard drive and replaced it and then my other backup hard drive just outright failed. But I cannot open the Rules window to edit and improve the Rules. The rules must still be around because some of them still work to route incoming messages from one person to the proper mailbox. I cannot locate the window or menu item for Rules in Mail.
